A Dream Come True on Mt. Wanale from Cory Richardson on Vimeo.
Do you want to have kids? How about ten?
They need the loving care and guidance we all deserve, and you could be that person who gives them a fair chance at life... making sure they feel safe, are fed, have cozy beds, learn to read and can live their dreams.
We are calling heroes to gather from around the world to this Motherland where we are building our dream playground, garden and treehouse. We all have a lot to learn from each other in this circle. Plan to stay awhile. You will not want to leave.
Frustrated by the slow pace of change as an extension worker in Uganda, Sam Rich set up a consultancy to design and publish teaching materials for farmers all over East Africa.

Hero of the Month: Sam Rich, Uganda.
Sitting under a mango tree with a small group of Ugandan farmers eight years ago, I thought I’d found the perfect placement as a volunteer. We would discuss the relative benefits of chilli pepper and onions as insect repellents one week and various designs of fuel-saving stoves the next. Working for a small NGO, talking to farmers every day, using participatory methods to find solutions to their problems, and seeing small improvements week by week, was an experience I’ll never forget.
But I soon realised two things: first, that there was a huge demand for this kind of basic knowledge and second, that this demand was never going to be met by teaching small groups of farmers under mango trees.
I needed teaching materials to help these messages reach a bigger audience, and to enable farmers to teach themselves. But all I found were lengthy black and white textbooks with too few illustrations and too much technical language. Teaching materials seemed to be designed more for scientists than for farmers. Since arriving in Uganda, I’d been impressed by the educational campaigns about HIV. There were shiny bright billboards showing condoms on the roadside, and dog-eared posters decorating bars and restaurants about faithfulness and abstinence. You could see how the country had become a success story in the fight against AIDS, halving HIV prevalence in ten years.
I began to wonder why agriculture and livelihoods were not getting the same attention as HIV. Why weren’t there billboards about growing fruits and vegetables? Why weren’t there posters about making compost and mulching? And that was the moment I realised I wanted to try and do for agriculture what had already been done for HIV.
I started designing and publishing the first posters for farmers in 2004, and in the last 5 years we've produced hundreds of thousands of posters for farmers and schools about simple, low cost ways they can improve their livelihoods.

Action Hero Hammocks & Clothing
The logo sewn onto the hammocks and clothing is the Action Hero Network brand-- a key into the action hero world. The tree is symbolic of the hero`s path. Our community, or network, is our roots. The hero, who can be any of us at anytime, rises up to branch out and take action-- to grow through service or passion, spreading love, which then returns to nourish the roots.
