Stone Island Community School Project

WE ARE THE ONES WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR

Stone Island is a beautiful rural community on Mexico's central pacific coast, five minutes ferry ride across the harbor from Mazatlan, Sinaloa. Members of the community have begun creating a building project using natural and reused materials on school land to develop a sharing space to relearn how to live in harmony with the earth.

Stone Island schools tour with Chabella - part 1

This tour is the first stage in the process of creating a community education center focused on earth-based cooperative learning.

Stone Island earth education center vision shared - Part 2

The land in this scene is part of the school and is located in the middle of town. The wall made of tires Chabella is talking about has already been made and can be seen in the movie I made called Building Ants.

This space will become a community garden and green/natural building demonstration site. It could also have a tool library and workshop spaces for skill sharing. Creating this space will be a priority of Action Hero Network crew winter 2010.

Stone Island earth education center -- Aaron, Joe and Corazon play with Coco - Part 3

This drama was performed by Cello Joe, Aaron Ableman and Corazon Richardson for city and school officials from Mazatlan and Stone Island. The premise of the play is that a little boy finds a coco and uses it as a soccer ball until a man selling balloons asks to trade it for the balloons. The man tells the boy he can sell the balloons and buy all sorts of things. The boy reluctantly accepts, then finds it difficult to sell them, they bust, and then he has nothing, but his thirst. The man offers to sell him the coco milk, but the boy has no money, so he is out of luck. Part one ends there. The scene starts over, and when the man asks for the coco the boy says no. The man tells him he is very thirsty. The boy opens the coco and they share the milk. End of story.

Companies are currently trying to buy the land where cocos grow on Stone Island, including land owned in trust by the school. Some people are in favor of selling the land to make a quick buck. Others, like Chabella, are working toward using the school land to create a community garden and public learning space to do natural building projects.

Stone Island Eco Coco workshop - Part 4

Eco Coco is a business created by Chabella and Trini to make jewelry out of coco shells. The walls of their workshop are made out cob... which is mud and grass and some reused glass bottles. She is here with officials from Mazatlan and Stone Island to explain what they do as an example of a sustainable business thriving off local materials.

Stone Island tour - the cob hut - part 5

Chabella shows officials the cob hut at her camp ground. This is the last scene in the tour.

The more conscious you are... the more you are called to action.
